4 Quick Ways to

Stay Organized

as a Music Teacher

(and a Game-Changing Course to Help!)

As a music teacher, juggling lesson planning, grading, performances, and endless admin tasks can feel overwhelming. Staying organized is the key to avoiding burnout and making your teaching life smoother. If you’re looking for practical, easy-to-implement organization tips, you’re in the right place!

Here are four quick ways I streamline my workload, plus an exclusive resource that will take your organization to the next level!

1. Batch Repeated Tasks

Instead of tackling small tasks throughout the day, group them together to save time and energy.

✅ Lesson Planning – Dedicate one day a week to map out lessons instead of scrambling daily.
✅ Photocopying – Print everything you need for the week in one go.
✅ Grading & Inputting Marks – Set a scheduled time to input grades rather than doing it sporadically.

This batching method prevents constant task-switching, helping you stay focused and efficient!

2. Sort Your Marking by Time

Grading doesn’t have to feel like a never-ending task! I sort my assessments into two categories:

  • Less than 15 minutes (quick quizzes, check-ins)
  • More than 15 minutes (essays, performance rubrics)

This method helps me tackle grading efficiently—whether I have a quick break or a full prep period to dive in.

3. Keep Performance Rubrics Ready

With 30+ classes and countless student performances, having rubrics prepped and accessible is a game-changer.

🎶 Use printable rubrics for playing tests, assessments, and check-ins.

🎶 Keep them in a binder or digital file for quick reference and grading on the go.

Having these tools at your fingertips means you’re always ready—even if assessments happen outside class time.

4. Plan Your Planning Time (Yes, Really!)

One of the biggest time-wasters? Sitting down during prep time without a clear plan of what needs to get done.

🔹 Before your prep period, write down the 3-5 key things you want to accomplish.
🔹 Prioritize tasks that will save you time later (lesson prep, student feedback, concert planning).
🔹 Stick to a time-blocking system so you don’t get sidetracked!

Maximizing your planning time means less stress and more productivity—a win-win!
