It is an inquiry, project-based learning cumulative task that allows for differentiation among your students, and an opportunity for your students to become an expert and demonstrate their “genius” in a topic of their choice to their class or school community.

This resource includes:

  • Topic Suggestions & Brain Dump Exercise
  • Step 1: Project Proposal & Rubric
  • Step 2: Action Plan & Rubric
  • Step 3: Research Plan, Graphic Organizers & Rubric
  • Step 4: Project Creation
  • Step 5: Finalize finished product
  • Step 6: Final Product Rubric
The project outline includes a variety of planning pages for students to choose their topic, brainstorm, create an action plan, conduct research, and critically apply their new knowledge through a final product of their choice. There are multiple graphic organizers available to students to help guide them independently through their project. Evaluations and checkpoints are built into the project outline. After each step, a rubric is provided for assessment. You may wish to conference one on one with students to give them immediate feedback on their project and help guide them throughout each step. The rubrics are meant as a tool to check in with students as well as have students be accountable for each stage of the project.

Benefits of Passion Projects

Passion projects encourage creativity, promote inquiry, foster perseverance, and build problem solving skills. The idea of “passion projects” (also known as Genius Hour or 20% Time) is based on a practice used by Google employees. The company Google allows their developers to spend up to 20% of their work week on projects of personal interests. The idea is that if employees are inspired, happy and fulfilled, they will become more engaged, motivated, productive and innovative throughout all the work they do.
