Why Teach Social Emotional Learning Skills

Social emotional skills help students learn how to manage their emotions, develop stronger relationships, gain awareness of the feelings they have, and have an opportunity to better understand and process those feelings through strategies that involve music. This project is a great way for students to critically think about how they can use music in their own lives, particularly by developing a music listening strategy that can utilize when experiencing big emotions within their everyday lives. This music-focused social emotional learning assignment allows students to be meta-cognitive of their own experience in music and their emotions, analyze the elements of music, and apply their understanding through songs of their own choice.

A rubric is also included for assessment, with a success criteria checklist that students can refer too while completing the assignment and before they submit.
