In the Soundtrack of my Life – Elements of Music Project, students will:

• Create a playlist of songs that represent themselves
• Choose 1 song from their playlist to conduct an in-depth analysis of the elements of music
• Complete a written component, where students will explain the mood of the piece, any visuals that come to mind, and why they chose this song (using their explanation of the elements of music to support their reasoning)
• Create cover art to express the music they hear through a visual representation

In the Soundtrack of my Life – Connecting Music & Emotion Project, students will:

• Create 4 short playlists of songs that represent different moods/emotions
• Choose 2 songs from 2 different playlists. Students will explain how the song connects to their experience with that emotion, and then analyze the musical elements
• Critically think about the connection between the power of music and our emotions
• Create cover art, a visual representation of the music they hear

In the Soundtrack of my Life – Musical Genres Project, students will:

• Choose a genre of music to research and explore in greater detail, including place of origin, time period, key musical characteristics and notable artists
• Create a playlist of songs that represent the chosen genre of music
• Choose 1 song from their playlist to analyze and describe the elements of music
• Create cover art, a visual representation of the music they hear

In the Soundtrack of my Life – Music Throughout the Decades Project, students will:

• Choose a decade (i.e. the 20s, 70s, etc) of music to research and explore in greater detail, including historical events, key musical characteristics and notable artists and events from this time period.
• Create a playlist of songs that are most representative of the music from that time period. Students will include the title of song, artist, and the year the song was released.
• Choose 1 song from their playlist to analyze and describe the elements of music.
• Create cover art, a visual representation of the music they hear.

These projects are a great way for students to analyze the elements of music and apply their understanding through songs that they love and that were of their own choice.

Rubrics for each project are also included for assessment, with a success criteria checklist that students can refer to while completing the assignment and before they submit.
